Abstract

Background/Objectives: The basic idea of the project is to create a smart helmet that prevents the bike from starting unless the rider wears it, thereby ensuring the safety of the riders. The main purpose of the project is to promote helmet usage.

Method: The system design will require the rider to wear the helmet before starting the two-wheeler. The helmet will be connected to the vehicle's key ignition system, which will be electronically controlled. Inside the smart helmet, micro switches will be fitted to function as on/off switches for the ignition. The system will incorporate an RF transmitter and an RF receiver. The bike will only start when the rider wears the helmet, as RF signals emitted by the transmitter are sensed by the receiver in the bike's ignition switch.

Findings: In India, motorcycles are preferred over cars due to their lower running costs, easier maintenance, parking convenience, and maneuverability in traffic. With over 37 million two-wheeler users in India, the accident rate for motorcycles is significantly higher compared to four-wheelers. Motorcycles have a higher fatality rate in accidents than trucks and buses. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, there were approximately 1,44,391 motorcycle accidents in 2015, resulting in 1,35,343 injuries and 36,803 deaths. Fatal brain injuries are a major cause of death in road accidents. Thus, wearing a helmet is crucial for protecting the head of a two-wheeler rider. Studies have shown that helmet usage can reduce accident-related deaths by 30 to 40 percent. The risk of death is 2.5 times higher for riders not wearing helmets compared to those who wear them. Riders wearing helmets have a significantly higher probability of survival during accidents. This project aims to promote accident avoidance and enhance the safety and security of bike riders.

Applications: This technology can effectively reduce accidents and casualties during riding. It can also be utilized to spread road safety awareness among the youth and help in reducing the number of traffic rule violations.
